9TH ANNUAL JURJOS SURF TOURNAMENT
I am happy to announce the opening of a new eatery in Bahia Asuncion right on the beach in town. Our amigo Blady…Lenin & Juanita’s(restaurant owners)son has built a beautiful palapa at the oceans edge and serves fantastic seafood…ceviche, cocktails, tostadas, oysters, clams, scallops, octupus etc. and will soon have fish & shrimp tacos too. At the moment he is open friday-sunday all day long. It is so great to be at the beach with the cooling breeze watching the kids boogie boarding and be outside and the food is wonderful too….nice thing to do after a swim! we wish them success in their new venture and are happy to welcome a new place to eat here in town!
A HURRICANE EVERY WEEK IN SEPTEMBER
The worst damage here was the giant over 20′ swell that Norbert kicked up. Here is a video of that storm and the dramatic waves hitting our shore.
NEW PEMEX GAS STATION OPEN….FINALLY!!!!
After years of waiting, we finally have a Pemex station here in the village with regular hours 6am-10pm and even diesel fuel. The store will be open by the end of the year. This is a huge plus for the town to have reasonably priced gas…now if we could only get a bank machine!
Asuncion is getting new power poles out in the point area where new houses have been built and also doubling the phone lines which is fantastic news for people trying to get phones. There have been no phone lines available for a couple of years now so this is excellent news for all the new people who have moved here who are anxious to have internet. Progress is happening here…the road has been newly paved, all the pot holes fixed…now if only they would get the new Pemex gas station finished!
MY FAVORITE MEXICAN HOLIDAY…REVOLUTION DAY!
Revolution Day on Nov.20 is my favorite holiday in Mexico. It starts off with a parade with the kids dressed up as pistoleros & adelitas in colorful traditional costumes and the schools present a program of dancing and human pyramids at the stadium. In the evening there are food stands that serve traditional food often cooked over an open fire.
Here is a slide show of the day…enjoy!
HIGHWAY INTO ASUNCION COMPLETELY DONE NOW!!!
We are delighted to announce that the highway from Vizcaino to Asuncion is newly repaved and fantastic! Not a pothole anywhere and now only takes an hour to get here much to the delight of the locals and visitors alike.

NEW RESTAURANT/BAR OPENS IN ASUNCION
Congratulations to to the partners who built a nice new building at the entrance to town called Keykos. It is a restaurant/bar that serves delicious tacos, tortas and stuffed baked potatoes and is also available for special functions. The bar is a popular kareoke place where the village singers show off their talent.
HIGHWAY IMPROVEMENTS UNDERWAY
Finally the horrible pot holed part of the highway from Vizcaino to the Asuncion turnoff is being repaired. The road construction crews are working hard to repave the worst part of the road that has plagued us over the past year as it deteriorated into terrible conditions…this is VERY good news for locals and visitors alike who travel that road.

NEW PEMEX GAS STATION COMING TO BAHIA ASUNCION
THE POT HOLE PART OF THE ROAD IS BEING FIXED!!!
A VISIT BY THE GOVERNOR OF BAJA SUR
Marcos Covarrubias, the Governor of Baja Sur came to Asuncion on Thursday to inaugurate our new baseball stadium…the only one in the area with astro turf and lights. The stadium was crowded and the mood jovial…the Governor was an impressive speaker…very relaxed, humorous and warm. He talked about the importance of sports and the youth of today needing healthy activities and donated some boxes of balls to the local teams and even tried to hit a pitch.
But the crowd applauded the most enthusiastically when he announced that as of today, work would begin to fix the nasty pot holed part of the road that everyone is complaining about.
This means a great deal to our village…and sure enough, the surveyors were out yesterday and machinery will start work on Monday. He also gave us a new garbage truck and talked about the aqueduct and paving project along the coast road.
He spent a long time with people in the stadium hearing their petitions for help and listening to their comments. He was very patient and gracious leaving the village very satisfied that the government has not forgotten Bahia Asuncion. I had a chance to thank him for fixing the road and let him know how much it meant to the villagers and the tourism sector and his aids took this photo of us…It was a great day!
2012…THE OUTLOOK IS POSITIVE FOR THIS YEAR
Tourism in mexico has suffered the last few years due to a struggling economy and overblown media reporting of drug violence. Luckily Bahia Asuncion is far removed from any violence and has a prosperous economy without tourism dollars. This year’s lobster season has been the best ever and the village is bustling with new building projects and home remodeling as well as lots of families have new vehicles.
Tourism is picking up a bit as well with many visitors in the area to see the gray whale calving lagoons. This year there are large numbers of whales in all the lagoons very early in the season…over 1,675 in Ojo de Liebre now. Here are some photos of trips I guided the last few weeks.
2011 FINISHES UP WITH A BEAUTIFUL BEACH WEDDING
It was a picture perfect sunny, hot day when our daughter Sirena was wed to Adrian Robledo on the beach here in Asuncion. It was a fairy tale wedding that every girl dreams of and we wish the newlyweds happiness and success in their life ahead.
Here are some photos of the special day.
NEW ROAD WORK BEING DONE ON THE POTHOLE STRETCH
The Governor of the State was in the area last week and announced the upgrade of the road from Vizcaino-Tortugas…famous for the horrible pot holes! Amazingly enough, the work has begun in earnest and this awful stretch of road is being resurfaced now! Great news for us as this has always been a big problem for vehicles coming and going from here.
NOVEMBER WAS GORGEOUS…TOURISM DOWN…FISHING UP!
The weather was simply beautiful this month with warm days, not much wind and nice water temps…perfect for fishing and beach days! We have had lots of fun guests and lovely parties with the locals and visitors including thanksgiving, Revolution day & a wedding shower for my daughter Sirena.
OCTOBER BRINGS MORE VISITORS
October is my favorite month for weather with perfect air and water temps…great for beach activities, fishing and getting projects done outside. It is also the month when many ex-pats return to their homes here so there are lots of building projects going on…gardens worked on, additions built onto houses etc. It is also when we start eating lobster and sashimi of the fish the fishermen bring home!!!
There is a wonderful new food stand on the main street by the coop beach. The 2 Laura’s make outstanding tortas de carne and french fries and are open very very early…before dawn for the fishermen and also serve breakfast, coffee etc. and will make lunches to take on the pangas and they are open every day till around 9!
SEPTEMBER A BUSY MONTH IN ASUNCION
September is a very busy month here as the fishermen are making their traps to prepare for lobster season that opens next month. There was also a fantastic beach clean up funded by the government that paid locals to pick up garbage on the beaches and abandoned lots in the village. The new mayor has been great at getting some of the village roads graded and general clean up.
The road leaving Vizcaino that has alot of potholes has been fixed up a bit…some of the big holes have been filled but there are still some surprises so dont go too fast.
There is a new B&B in town as well opened by Ed & Jean of Pta.Chivato…it is a lovely place and we wish them success in their new venture.
bookings call: 615-104-3524 or from the United States, 011 521 615-104-3524
And there is a new palapa restaurant in town too across from the Verduzco hotel that has great food and a nice beach view…nice to have more restaurant options.
VET CLINIC A HUGE SUCCESS IN ASUNCION
Many thanks to the crew from the Health Department from Sta.Rosalia who put on the first free vet clinic on Aug.24th. I enjoyed helping out as the receptionist and assistant along with a couple other expats, Maria & Stan who assisted in the operating room. Over 200 pets were given rabies shots and 40 were neutered and sterilized and the kids loved getting to watch a real live operation in progress. This will make a big difference to the village with less unwanted puppies in the streets and happier, healthier pets. they plan to hold these clinics at least once a year. Here is our group after a long day at the office and a little slide show of how the day went and photos of some of the village pets….lots of good looking dogs here http://s385.photobucket.com/albums/oo295/blowhole1/Vet%20Clinic%20Aug%2024%202011/
SUMMER IS FINALLY HERE
The days are getting longer now…sunset lasts till near 9:00 and the winds are lightening up. The shoreline has come alive with people fishing for halibut and there are thousands of birds, dolphins and sea lions frolicking with the bait fish.
Abalone season has come to an end…and what a fine season it was and fishermen move onto sea cucumber and caracol now and white sea bass and some yellowtail are showing up in the cooperativa nets.
Everyone is sprucing up their homes and businesses in preparation for summer. This artist has produced several signs & works of art like at Floriani’s store, the local hotel and Manuel Arce’s where he painted some nice fish murals.
Asuncion’s lovely gardens and flowers are blooming and the song of summer is in the air.
SPRING AROUND ASUNCION
Spring is a quiet time of year around town…most expats and the gray whales have returned north & the cold current brings cool, windy weather. The abalone and caracol fishermen report excellent production this season which results in locals fixing up their houses. Net fishermen have been pleased with their catches of white sea bass and even the odd yellowtail. All indications point to an early and excellent fishing season this summer. Let’s hope the water warms up alot more than last year.
NEW WATER LINE OUT TO THE POINT…FINALLY!!!
SCHOOL SUPLIES DONATED BY YACHT AID GROUP
An enormous yacht anchored in Asuncion to drop off a gift of 5,000 pesos in new school supplies for the primary school. The director, teachers and students were thrilled to take the panga to visit the yacht Tamsen to receive the supplies. This organization contacted me to organize the donation and we hope to work more with them in the future.
Here are some photos of the event
NEW HIGHWAY PAVED ALL THE WAY INTO ASUNCION!!!
We have noticed a big increase in visitors to the town as well since the road has been finished…lots more campers and folks just coming in to take a look as well as family & friends of locals here. It has been many years in the works but finally we have our new road!!!
NEW WATER LINE COMES TO THE WEST END OF TOWN AND THE POINT
After years of waiting for the promised water line, the ditch digging machine started putting the trench in starting at the end of the pavement on the main street out to the beach and along a street where new houses are springing up. In less than a week, they had the new pipe laid and houses are hooking up. Hopefully, next week they will start on the other long awaited line out to the point. This is welcomed progress and long overdue.
POT HOLES BEING FILLED ON VIZCAINO ROAD!!! THIS IS GREAT NEWS for everyone…paving nearly completed on the dirt part and they are working hard filling those nasty potholes…just in time for lobster season next week.
NEW ROAD CONSTRUCTION UPDATE…..seeing as we are in Mexico…things are taking alot longer than expected for a variety of reasons. The new date for completing the pavement into town is the beginning of October…it may be done a bit before that but that is when the governor is expected to come and cut the ribbon.
The nasty pothole section leaving Vizcaino has now been fixed but the bad holes closer to the turnoff to Asuncion are still a challenge to navigate but are supposed to be fixed when the paving is done.
Road construction is chugging along and new blacktop being laid on the remaining 10 km so that the new highway will be paved all the way into Asuncion…supposedly by August 2010…just in time for our traditional fiestas Aug.15. Upon completion of this section, the crews will then fix the nasty potholes on the Vizcaino-Asuncion turnoff stretch!!
Make sure you get out to Asuncion Island to see the newborn sea lions born twice a year. There are over 7,000 sea lions and some seals as well that love to surround the panga and play with those who get in the water with them. Snorkeling with sea lions is a very popular activity…they are just as curious about you!
Here is a slide show of Mick & maria from Mulege from Cortez Explorers Dive Shop and the girls Emma & Thea are from Norway.
There was a big mountain bike race here in May. Our village hosted teams from Guerrero Negro, San Ignacio, Vizcaino and La Bocana. We have a world class bike course that is open to the public as well so bring your bike when you come and visit us and train with our team. Here is a slide show of the race.
There is a new restaurant in town called Loncheria Mari that is terrific, clean and has excellent personal service. They serve seafood, burgers, tacos, pizza and are open all day till 10:30. It is located across the street from the Coop in town at the 3-way stop sign.
Abalone season ended this week and caracol will begin next week. Water temps are still very cold…around 60 degrees…brrr. Halibut are moving into the beaches now for shore fishing.
the weather is perfect…sunny but not too hot and nice cool evenings for sleeping
